Come and visit one of the region's geological parks and nature reserves at Auvers-Saint-Georges. Unlike any other park in the Ile-de-France, this "site museum" features the sedimentary strata of the Stampian (a geological period of the Tertiary era), between 34 and 28 million years ago. This stratotype, discovered in 1852 by the famous naturalist and geologist Alcide d'Orbigny, is now a world-wide reference point in geology. Learn about the geology of the Essonne with a reconstruction of the environment in the Stampian some 30 million years ago through study of the fossils, the relationship between the sub-soil, the soil, the flora and the fauna. Best time of year to visit: May to August. Duration of tour: 1 hr to 1 hr 30.
