Etampes boasts a remarkable heritage of religious buildings such as the churches of Saint-Basile, Saint-Gilles, Notre-Dame-du-Fort and Saint-Martin d'Etampes. Saint-Martin-d'Etampes is the successor to several other churches on the site and its construction was begun in 1140, work continuing until the early XIIIth century. It is this continuity which gives the church its unity of style, but it is its leaning tower which is its most unusual feature.
